This spiral stairway inside the Wood Island Lighthouse in Biddeford, Maine was constructed by embedding the individual steps into the external structure of the lighthouse tower. In early 2003, a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation was formed to care for the light station. The group, Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse (FOWIL), has been working for a full restoration of the lighthouse tower, keeper’s house, boathouse, and fuel house.

The fuel house was constructed in 1903 when the light was converted from oil to a much more flammable kerosene which needed to be stored away from the other structures on the island.
