A view of the Wood Island Lighthouse in Biddeford, Maine from inside the doorway of the lighthouse's fuel house. The present lighthouse was built in 1839. The fuel house was constructed in 1903 when the light was converted from oil to a much more flammable kerosene which needed to be stored away from the other structures on the island. In early 2003, a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation was formed to care for the light station. The group, Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse (FOWIL), has been working for a full restoration of the lighthouse tower, keeper’s house, boathouse, and fuel house.
